Films 4 Life- In Conversation With David Mackenzie

15th October

Films 4 Life are at the Odeon West End in Leicester Square this Thursday (9/10/13) to meet David Mackenzie, the director of Starred Up (a film about a violent teenager called Eric (Jack O’Connell) who is transferred to adult prison where his father, Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) is also an inmate) ahead of its British premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

As a charity, we’re focused on gaining inspiration from dedicated filmmakers by seeing what lengths the best go to achieve the results. In Mackenzie’s case, authenticity was paramount to creating a great prison drama. The major factor in achieving this was the location, which was an actual former prison in Belfast.

Whilst cameras are flashing at him from directions in the hustle and bustle of the red carpet MacKenzie was opening up about his experience of being in Northern Ireland filming. … Read More »

Films4Life at the Cannes Film Festival

27th May

Thanks to the kind generosity of Tom Bingham from Push Studios (Films4Life founding supporter), the Fims4Life team attended the Cannes Film Festival last week.

The aim was to spread the word on this fantastic initiative and generate industry support.

The trip was a great success overall, with key industry figures already pledging their support and an offer of work placements for several young people from the Films4Life community on a project later this year.

We met some great people during our time in Cannes and we would like to thank everyone for their positive and constructive feedback.

Mickey De Hara – Founder

16th May

2000 – 2006

A chance meeting with Guy Ritchie was the starting point for me. I had the stories and the language in my head but as I have dyslexia I never believed I could write.
I had a colourful upbringing, and even from an early age I didn’t always attend school.
Guy became my mentor. Shoved a laptop in front of me, loaded the ‘Movie Magic’ software and told me to write.
I worked with him on the scripts for ‘Snatch’ and ‘RocknRolla’, even getting my face on screen. Meeting Guy was my lucky break and the rest (admittedly with a short interruption at Her Majesty’s Pleasure) is history.

2010

I went away for a while, C Wing – Brixton Prison in fact. Not something I’m proud of, especially as it was for something I didn’t do!

But it’s funny how things happen. I was a … Read More »

Education

16th May

At Films4Life we firmly believe that a great school education is invaluable to all and that hard work, the right attitude and sound advice given at an early stage can lead to success in whatever you choose to do.

What we also firmly believe is that a given set of economic circumstances or a wrong path taken in life, for whatever reason, should not completely define your future.

To paraphrase one of our key supporters, Tony Jordan, “as a country I don’t think we serve our young people well, the future is in their hands yet we leave them on the periphery of society, without work and often without hope. As a society we should hang our heads in shame…”

The Films4Life ethos is simple. To inspire, motivate, educate, encourage and nurture an exciting new generation of young, talented British filmmakers and to … Read More »

The website is fully responsive so will function and look good no matter what platform it is viewed on.

“Liking what you do is important in all types of work. Passion for the craft fuels excellence. “Every time I go to a movie it is magic no matter what the movie is about”
