Films 4 Life- In Conversation With David Mackenzie

15th October

Films 4 Life are at the Odeon West End in Leicester Square this Thursday (9/10/13) to meet David Mackenzie, the director of Starred Up (a film about a violent teenager called Eric (Jack O’Connell) who is transferred to adult prison where his father, Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) is also an inmate) ahead of its British premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

As a charity, we’re focused on gaining inspiration from dedicated filmmakers by seeing what lengths the best go to achieve the results. In Mackenzie’s case, authenticity was paramount to creating a great prison drama. The major factor in achieving this was the location, which was an actual former prison in Belfast.

Whilst cameras are flashing at him from directions in the hustle and bustle of the red carpet MacKenzie was opening up about his experience of being in Northern Ireland filming. … Read More »

FILMS4LIFE AT WILDERNESS FESTIVAL

8th August

Films4Life is excited to announce that we are collaborating with Friends of the Earth to create a film around Friends of the Earth at Wilderness. Friends of the Earth has a busking stage at the festival where headline acts come and perform intimate gigs in a more rustic setting than the main stages, getting up close and personal with the fans.

In this way they raise funds to help them continue their vital work, whilst showing everyone a great time. The charity commissioned Films4Life to create a short film for them, capturing the artists who perform on the stage as well as interviews with some key Friends of the Earth employees to help raise their profile and increase understanding of the issues that they are tackling.

Here’s a link to their website, check out our fellow charity: http://www.foe.co.uk/

Jason Flemyng, Plotting A New Narrative

2nd August

CLASH did a article for one of our most prominant supporters, Jason Flemyng, who has been described as the ‘Kevin Bacon of British Film’ due to his huge list of credits. We were asked to go along and photograph the ocassion.

“Jason is a great believer in helping people with talent and as we are friends and pass actors of “SNATCH the film,” by Guy Richie.
after telling him of my hope of helping  young people in the film industry his words were ” count me in”.
He spoke about his life growing up and how hard it was in the interview with myself and the CLASH MAGAZINE.
But, he made it clear he would mentor for Films4Life. which said it all, A top man…..”
Mickey De Hara.

Films4Life Actors Workshop

3rd July

We are holding a film actors workshop for anyone interested in acting in front of a camera for the practice of their craft or simply for the experience- a keen interest in acting is essential but relevant experience is not.The sessions will consist of:

Playing out film and TV scripted scenes to camera.

Learning acting on film through watching your scene on playback with constructive notes from session leaders, industry insiders and the views of your peers.

Guided improvisation scenes which will be filmed every month by our in house Films4Life Crew – eventually leading to regular members having the option of their scenes created into a showreel using our editors skills.

Throughout the year there will be visits, talks and masterclasses from the Films4Life Supporters- a very talented bunch I’m sure you will agree.

Films4Life founding father and award winning screenwriter Mickey Dehara will … Read More »

Films4Life at the Cannes Film Festival

27th May

Thanks to the kind generosity of Tom Bingham from Push Studios (Films4Life founding supporter), the Fims4Life team attended the Cannes Film Festival last week.

The aim was to spread the word on this fantastic initiative and generate industry support.

The trip was a great success overall, with key industry figures already pledging their support and an offer of work placements for several young people from the Films4Life community on a project later this year.

We met some great people during our time in Cannes and we would like to thank everyone for their positive and constructive feedback.

Mickey De Hara – Founder

16th May

2000 – 2006

A chance meeting with Guy Ritchie was the starting point for me. I had the stories and the language in my head but as I have dyslexia I never believed I could write.
I had a colourful upbringing, and even from an early age I didn’t always attend school.
Guy became my mentor. Shoved a laptop in front of me, loaded the ‘Movie Magic’ software and told me to write.
I worked with him on the scripts for ‘Snatch’ and ‘RocknRolla’, even getting my face on screen. Meeting Guy was my lucky break and the rest (admittedly with a short interruption at Her Majesty’s Pleasure) is history.

2010

I went away for a while, C Wing – Brixton Prison in fact. Not something I’m proud of, especially as it was for something I didn’t do!

But it’s funny how things happen. I was a … Read More »

Education

16th May

At Films4Life we firmly believe that a great school education is invaluable to all and that hard work, the right attitude and sound advice given at an early stage can lead to success in whatever you choose to do.

What we also firmly believe is that a given set of economic circumstances or a wrong path taken in life, for whatever reason, should not completely define your future.

To paraphrase one of our key supporters, Tony Jordan, “as a country I don’t think we serve our young people well, the future is in their hands yet we leave them on the periphery of society, without work and often without hope. As a society we should hang our heads in shame…”

The Films4Life ethos is simple. To inspire, motivate, educate, encourage and nurture an exciting new generation of young, talented British filmmakers and to … Read More »

The Films4Life Community

“I am extremely grateful that I discovered my passion. I love movies; I love to watch them, I love to make them”
George Lucas

A strategic working group of supporters, trainers and mentors has been formed from a multi-disciplined cross-section of British film industry professionals. With extensive contributions from this working group, we are in the process of creating a website to attract and connect young people who are passionate about working in the film industry.

The website is fully responsive so will function and look good no matter what platform it is viewed on.

“Liking what you do is important in all types of work. Passion for the craft fuels excellence. “Every time I go to a movie it is magic no matter what the movie is about”

Steven Spielberg

This exciting community ‘magazine style’ website, will offer:

Broadcast platform for peer review
